World Water Day: 5 tips for smarter water consumption
In light of World Water Day, we'd like to take a moment to consider how we can use water more intelligently. Discover 5 practical tips in this blog!
Water is one of our most valuable resources. Yet, water is not always used wisely during cleaning activities. At BOMA, we believe that cleaning should not only be efficient, but can also have a positive impact on people, the planet and costs. With our Let's Rethink Cleaning approach, we help organisations work more sustainably without compromising on results. Discover 5 practical tips in this blog to start using water more wisely.
1. Avoid environmentally harmful cleaning products
When cleaning, it is almost inevitable that product residues will eventually end up in the water cycle. That is why it is important to avoid environmentally harmful cleaning products. Did you know that there are even environmentally beneficial products available?
Trebio and Probio products go a step further than traditional 'eco-friendly' products. Thanks to probiotic micro-organisms, they actively contribute to water purification and the maintenance of a natural microbial balance when they are released back into the environment after use. Trebio contains an advanced consortium of bacteria that work together to provide powerful and sustainable cleaning. They remove organic contamination deep from surfaces whilst having a positive impact on the ecosystem. A win-win situation!
2. Use an i-mop and save up to 90% water
Mechanisation can drastically reduce your water consumption during cleaning. The BOMA i-mop machines are a good example of this. Thanks to the clever way in which water is applied directly to the brushes and the powerful mechanical action of the brushes, much less water is needed to achieve the same, or even better, results. Compared to a traditional manual mop system, you can save up to 90% of water with an i-mop. That amounts to an average of 3,000 litres of water per year per cleaning professional.
We'd like to add an extra tip here: by choosing an i-mop, you're also supporting Made Blue. Thanks to our partnership, Made Blue invests one litre of water in a developing country for every litre of water saved by the i-mop. These litres of cleaning water saved therefore go where drinking water is needed most. Thanks to this project, together with our customers, we provide drinking water for an entire school year to around 11,000 children every year. By 2025, thanks to the sale of our i-mops, Made Blue was able to provide nearly 13 million litres of water in developing countries!
3. Install sensor taps and save over 80% on water
Sensor taps are increasingly becoming the norm in washrooms, and with good reason. Not only are they more hygienic because you don't have to touch the tap, but they're also much more efficient in terms of water consumption. As the water stops automatically when you remove your hands, wastage is avoided. With a sensor tap, you can save up to 80% on water. A small investment with a big impact, both on your water bill and on the planet.
4. Replace the soapy water method with the spray method
The traditional soapy water method often uses more water and cleaning product than necessary. That is why we promote the use of microfibre solutions in combination with efficient working methods. Microfibre has a strong capillary effect, which means dirt is absorbed much more effectively. By using pre-impregnation or the spray method, you can use up to 90% less water. What's more, this also prevents overuse of cleaning products and method errors, which is not only more sustainable but also more efficient.
5. Choose high-quality textiles and optimise your washing process
Sustainable cleaning isn't just about the cleaning itself, but also about how you manage your materials. A system such as the Hydra, a manoeuvrable floor scrubber and mop system, combines microfibre with a smart design that efficiently picks up dirt. The power is concentrated on a narrow strip, ensuring very strong cleaning power with less water. Furthermore, thanks to a low wash volume, more mops can be washed per cycle, saving both water and energy. The high-quality microfibre also ensures less wear and tear and fewer microplastics.
